Mission / Policy
Back from the artistic-heritage of the British/American artist John S. Sargent,
the Hong Kong Academy of Fine Arts (HKAFA) was founded by internationally
acclaimed artist CHAN Hoi-ying. The HKAFA was the first to be acknowledged by the
Hong Kong Education Department. Its mission is to provide valuable Asian Cultural
Education and Experience as well as motivate students to contribute Artistic Culture
to society and gain professional training in art. The HKAFA students are given the
solid foundation upon which to develop their individual creativity, artistic style
and technique, enabling them to become professional artists, art educators, designers
/ illustrators, directors of art societies and associations.
The HKAFA bases its curriculum on a strong foundation in the development of accurate
drawing skills. Subjects range from Fine Arts to Design related fields. There are
flexible ongoing enrollment for all levels of experience and serious part time students.
The HKAFA also offers tailor made in-company art courses as well as weekday, evening,
weekend courses in English and Chinese for children and teenagers. The HKAFA is
involved in a number of international exchange programs, symposia, travel programs
on special topics and international exhibitions. The HKAFA welcome international

Program
Today, many artists find that they lack the opportunities to acquire
strong fundamental technical skills to render an object with accuracy, force and
conviction. HKAFA Program offers students from novice to experienced artists a Certificate
/ Diploma while building up their confidence and technical skills in drawing, watercolors
and painting.
Professor Chan designed the HKAFA Curriculum for the contemporary
student based on traditional methods of art instruction. The school has two main
objectives. One is to provide students with sufficient understanding to explore
form, space, light, color and other elements that make a good drawing. The other,
to ensure students develop the ability to observe with hand-eye coordination skills
in rendering subjects from life as well as from the imagination. Artists and students
who have a thorough understanding of these elements are able to visualize and produce
with greater creative flexibility.

Academy Exhibition Gallery
An extension of the HKAFA is the HKAFA Exhibition Gallery. It is
located on the second floor of the building. The students, Alumni, International
Artists and Designers commit both traditional and contemporary works to the exhibition.
A schedule of diverse exhibitions exploring aesthetics and culture is planned annually
by the exhibition committee. Students will also be introduced to Professor Chan's
masterpieces to help them realize individual techniques of well-known artists and
to distinguish the difference between western influences and techniques. The Gallery
houses an impressive collection on the historical development of Art in Hong Kong
between the years 1930 to 1960.
